Voters will continue to see on broadcast in Lansing that Tom Barrett served 22 years in the United States Army. Serving in uniform taught Barrett to put the mission before politics and to never leave anyone behind, and those are the same values he brings to Congress. As a father of four young kids, Tom Barrett understands the challenges facing Michigan families. In Congress, he’s not working for millionaires, he’s working for hardworking Michiganders to lower taxes and the costs of housing and healthcare.
Voters on broadcast in Detroit will see a contrast between Tom Barrett as a veteran who supports law and order and a Socialist felon who has called to defund the police.
Voters in both the Lansing and Detroit DMAs need to see, in his own words, that William Lawrence is a socialist felon who is way too extreme for Michigan families.
- William Lawrence founded the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and is running for Congress as a Socialist. On his podcast, he announced that his goal is “Winning Full Socialism In The United States” and to “Redistribute All The Land And All The Money.”
- William Lawrence publicly endorsed defunding the police, including defunding the Lansing police, and wants to “Throw Open The Gates” and eliminate America’s borders.
- William Lawrence was arrested and pleaded guilty to a felony after he chained himself to private property and was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of justice. He later went through a legal process to suppress his record so that the public could not access information on his crime.

Tom Barrett was born and raised in Michigan. Tom joined the United States Army, out of school. Tom attended Western Michigan University on the Montgomery GI Bill and graduated with honors in 2007. He lives in Charlotte with his wife, Ashley, and their four young children, Patrick, Eleanora, Gwendolyn, and Louis.

As a father of four young kids, Tom Barrett understands the challenges facing Michigan families. In Congress, he’s not working for millionaires, he’s working for hardworking Michiganders to lower taxes and the costs of housing and healthcare.
Tom Barrett authored legislation to lower the cost of housing and make it easier for first-time buyers to afford a home, including a tax-free First-Time Homebuyers Savings Account, allowing homeowners to keep their current mortgage rate when purchasing a new home, and cutting red tape to increase housing supply.
Michiganders are paying more every year for healthcare insurance that delivers less. Tom Barrett refuses campaign contributions from health insurance PACs and sponsored the Care Over Profits Act to force insurance companies to spend more of every premium dollar on actual patient care instead of executive bonuses and corporate profits.

Tom Barrett on Thursday hosted U.S. Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler, a member of President Donald Trump’s Cabinet, in mid-Michigan for the second time to meet with local workers and small-business owners who are benefiting from the relief Barrett and the president delivered through the Working Families Tax Cuts, also known as the Big Beautiful Bill.

- Barrett has helped advance numerous efforts to unleash what his office calls affordable, American energy and lower costs for families, including the Working Families Tax Cuts. This bill, which was signed into law in July 2025, is refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, reinstated quarterly onshore oil and gas lease sales, rescinded billions in “Green New Deal” subsidies, and reversed disastrous Biden-era policies that sent energy prices skyrocketing.

“We really want to onshore more of our manufacturing,” Barrett said, adding that President Trump’s policies are working to boost manufacturing in the mid-Michigan region. “That meant setting a permanent increase to the child tax credit. It meant that we added an adoption tax credit to that as well. No taxes on tips, no taxes on overtime, as well,” he said. On the walking tour, Barrett and Loeffler touted growth for small, local shops.
